In the past, people used tiles to build. In Mesopotamia, builders used river mud to make bricks. They found that stone was hard to find. So, they learned to bake clay in hot kilns. This made fired bricks very strong. These bricks helped protect walls for palaces and temples.

Artists also use tiles to make beautiful art. They can make complex patterns. Some tiles use a way called encaustic. This means the color goes all the way through the tile. This helps the pattern stay even if it wears down. In Iran, artists used a way called Haft-rang. This uses seven colors to make bright pictures.
