A potter shapes the soft clay into many forms. They might make a bowl, a cup, or a statue. Then, they heat the clay in a very hot oven. We call this oven a kiln. The heat makes the clay hard and strong.

There are three main types of pottery. Earthenware is made at low heat. It can be reddish, like terracotta. Stoneware is fired at a higher heat. It is very tough and good for kitchens. Porcelain is the highest fired type. It is very strong and can even let light through.

Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions. Some clay figures are 29,000 years old! Scientists study old pottery to learn about the past. They look at the clay and the patterns. This helps them see how people lived and traded. Pottery can even help us know how old a site is. It is a wonderful way to see history.
