It comes from animal skins. People use a way called tanning to stop the skins from rotting. This makes the material last for many years.

People have made leather for over 7,000 years. Today, China and India make much of it.

Making leather has three main steps. First, workers prepare the hide. They might soak it or remove the hair. Next comes tanning. This step makes the skin stable. It stays flexible even when it dries. Without tanning, a skin would turn hard and rot when wet.

Third is crusting. This step makes the leather thinner. It can also add color.

Many animals provide leather. Most leather comes from cattle. Sheep and goats are also common. Some leather comes from ostriches.
