Liming (leather processing)

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People use skins to make leather. One part of this is called liming. In liming, skins soak in an alkali solution. This is a mix that is very alkaline.

This mix helps clean the skin. It removes grease and fats. It also removes proteins. One type of protein is called keratin. Keratin is found in hair and scales. The alkali breaks down this keratin. This helps the hair come off.

The mix also helps the skin swell. This is called collagen swelling. Water moves into the skin. The skin gets much thicker. It can even double in weight!

This swelling splits the fiber bundles. The bundles are the small parts of the skin. They burst open because they get too thick. This is good for the leather. It lets dyes and oils soak in better. It also helps with tanning. Tanning is how leather is made. For cattle, this takes 18 hours. In some ways, hair is removed first. Then the skin is limed for 12 to 18 hours.
