It is often a mix of many different parts. The most important part is called a surfactant.

A surfactant molecule has two different ends. One end is hydrophilic. This means it loves water. The other end is hydrophobic. This means it does not like water. Instead, it loves grease and oil.

When you wash, these molecules work in a special way. The grease-loving ends grab onto dirt. The water-loving ends stay in the water. They form tiny groups called micelles.

These micelles trap the grease inside them. Then, the water carries the dirt away.

Many detergents have other parts too. Builders help soften hard water. Enzymes are bits that break down fats or starch. Some detergents also have dyes or nice smells.

People use them for many jobs. You might use them for laundry or dishes. They are even used in fuels to keep engines clean.
