A solvent is a substance that dissolves another substance.

The substance that gets dissolved is called a solute. When they mix, they make a solution. In a solution, everything is spread out perfectly. You cannot see the separate parts anymore.

Water is the most common solvent. It is used by all living things. It dissolves proteins and ions inside our cells. Some solvents are used in many ways. They are in paints, inks, and cleaners. For example, acetone is a solvent for nail polish.

Other solvents like toluene help thin out paint.

Scientists group solvents into two main types. These are polar and non-polar. Polar solvents have a charge. Water is a very strong polar solvent. Non-polar solvents do not have this charge. A good rule is "like dissolves like." This means polar solvents dissolve polar solutes best. Non-polar solvents dissolve non-polar things like oils. Water and oil do not mix. They will separate into two layers.

Some solvents are toxic. Others are biobased. Biobased solvents come from plants or food waste. These are often safer for the Earth.
