Lipids are a large group of organic molecules.

They include many different things like fats, waxes, and oils. They also include vitamins like A, D, E, and K.

Lipids help living things in many ways. One job is to store power for later use. They also act as signals in the body. Another job is to make up cell membranes. A membrane is a thin layer that holds a cell together.

Some lipids are hydrophobic. This means they do not mix with water. Other lipids are amphiphilic. This means they have one part that likes water and one part that does not. This helps them form structures like vesicles. These are tiny sacs.

There are many kinds of lipids. One kind is called triglycerides. These are the main fats found in animal tissue.

Another kind is phospholipids. These are key parts of cell walls. Some lipids, called sterols, are also very important. Cholesterol is a well-known sterol. It helps make up cell membranes. Humans must get some essential lipids from food. Our bodies cannot make them on their own.
