Scientists use special materials to start changes. These are called reagents.

A reagent is a substance added to a mix. It can cause a chemical reaction. It can also test if a reaction happens. Sometimes, a reagent makes a color change. This helps scientists find a substance.

Some reagents are used to measure how much of a substance is there. In biology, scientists use reagents to study cells. They use things like antibodies to work with cell matter.

They also use tools to find new drugs.

In a lab, purity is very important. Reagent-grade means the substance is very pure. This makes tests very precise and reliable. Groups like the American Chemical Society set these rules. Reagent-grade water must have very few impurities. It must have low levels of salt and bacteria. Other materials are less pure. We call these technical or crude grades. They are cheaper for easy work.

A reactant is a substance used up in a reaction. A reagent is used to study a reaction.
