In modern tanning, hides are often loaded into a large drum. The drum is filled with a liquid called tanning liquor. As the drum rotates, the liquor penetrates the full thickness of the hide. Once the penetration is even, workers perform basification. This process raises the pH of the liquid to fix the tanning material. Higher levels of fixed material increase the leather's resistance to shrinkage.

After tanning, the crusting process begins. This stage thins and lubricates the leather. It often includes dyeing or whitening the material. Finally, the leather is dried and softened. Some tanners add a finishing step, such as oiling, polishing, or embossing. Oiling helps improve water resistance and keeps the leather supple.

There are several distinct tanning methods used today. Vegetable tanning is the oldest method known to humans. It uses tannins extracted from vegetable matter like tree bark. Corrected grain leather is buffed to remove flaws before being embossed. Split leather is made from the corium, or the under layer. Suede is a soft, napped version made from the underside of a split. Some products use bonded leather, which is made from shredded scraps held together by polyurethane or latex.
