A kiln is a special type of oven that is very well insulated. This means it can hold a lot of heat inside without letting it escape.

People use kilns to reach temperatures high enough to change materials. They can harden soft clay into strong pottery or bricks. Kilns are also used to dry things like tobacco, corn, or wood.

Some kilns even turn wood into charcoal through a process called pyrolysis. This is a way to change materials using intense heat.

There are two main ways a kiln works. One way is through an intermittent kiln. You place items inside and close the door to start the heat. The temperature rises according to a specific schedule. After the work is done, the kiln and the items must cool down.

The other way is a continuous kiln, which is often a long tunnel. Items move slowly from a cool entrance to a hot center. As they move toward the exit, the temperature drops again. This method is very efficient because it recycles heat to warm new items.

Humans have used kilns for thousands of years. Long ago, people used simple pits in the ground to fire clay.

One of the earliest known kilns was found at a site called Yarim Tepe in modern Iraq. This kiln dates back to around 6000 BCE. In China, people developed advanced kilns before 2000 BCE. These early kilns could reach 1,000 °C. Later, they built dragon kilns that climbed up hillsides to help the heat rise.

Different types of kilns serve different jobs. A bottle kiln is a tall, shaped oven used for pottery.

In the north of China, people used smaller, compact mantou kilns. Modern industry uses many different designs today. Some kilns use natural gas because it is easy to control. Others use electricity, which is common in schools and hobby centers.

These modern tools often use computers to manage the heat very carefully.

Kilns are part of many things you see every day. The bricks in a house or the tiles on a floor likely came from a kiln. Even the glass in a window or the metal in a tool may have been treated with heat.
