Stoneware is a strong and dense type of pottery.

It is made by firing clay at very high temperatures. These temperatures usually range from 1100 °C to 1300 °C. This intense heat makes the clay vitrified, or glass-like. This means the pottery becomes impermeable to water. Because it does not soak up liquids, it is perfect for tableware. People use it for everyday items like bowls and plates.

It is also used for decorative vases and art.

Making stoneware involves a careful way of working with clay.

Most makers use prepared clay rather than clay dug straight from the ground. The main ingredients are often plastic fire clays or ball clays. Some makers also add quartz or feldspar to the mix. The clay often contains impurities like iron or carbon. These impurities can give the stoneware a grey or brownish color. Sometimes, potters use a process called twice-firing. They might do a biscuit firing at 900 °C first. Then, they do a glost firing between 1180 °C and 1280 °C to create a beautiful finish.

Stoneware has a very long history in many parts of the world.

In Asia, the Indus Valley civilization made stoneware bangles as early as 2600 BC. In China, large amounts of stoneware were made starting in the Han dynasty. During the Song dynasty, Jian ware tea bowls were very popular. These bowls were often used by Buddhist monks. In Japan, many people valued stoneware for the Japanese tea ceremony. They loved the rough and spontaneous look called wabi-sabi. This was different from the perfect look of porcelain.

Different regions developed their own special styles of stoneware.

In Europe, stoneware became common during the late Middle Ages. German potters were famous for making large jugs and beer mugs. By the 1300s, they were producing fully vitrified wares on a large scale. In the 1700s, England became a very important maker of fancy stoneware. A famous maker named Wedgwood developed Jasperware, which is a type of stoneware.

Other historical items include the decorated Bartmann jug from the 16th century.

Today, you can find stoneware in many places around you.
