People rub stones together to shape them. This can happen on purpose or by accident. Archaeologists find these tools all over the world. They are often the only things left at old sites. These tools help us understand how people lived long ago. They show us how early humans worked with plants and other materials.

Making these tools is a very hard job. First, a person must choose a tough stone. It cannot be a stone that cracks easily. Granite and basalt are great choices for this work. Some rocks have very tiny grains inside them. These small grains make the rock very hard to break.

To make a hole, a person might use a sharp stick. They can spin the stick with their hands. Adding sand to the hole helps the stone wear away faster. This takes a lot of time and effort.

These tools are part of the New Stone Age. This time is also called the Neolithic.

Different groups used them at different times. In the Levant, ground stones appeared in the Natufian period. In Japan, they appeared during the Paleolithic era. This might be 25,000 years before other places used them. A man named Christian Jürgensen Thomsen created the three-age system to study these periods. His work helps us name these different times in history.

People used ground stone for many different tasks. Some made axes to cut wood for building. They would grind notches into the stone to hold a handle.

Others made beautiful jewelry like beads and ear spools. These small items showed that a person had high status. Some people even made large bowls and pots for food. In the North American arctic, the Thule and Dorset cultures used ground slate. They made tools like projectile points and ulus from this stone.

One very important tool is the mortar and pestle. A mortar is a stone bowl used for grinding. A pestle is a heavy tool used to press into the bowl. People used them to turn seeds into fine powder. This powder could be used for cooking or for medicine. We still use these tools in kitchens today. Scientists study old stones by looking at tiny starch grains trapped in them. This helps them learn exactly what plants ancient people ate.
