You make it by mixing flour with a liquid like water or milk. The flour can come from many plants. Most people use wheat or rye. You can also use maize, rice, or even almonds. This simple mix can become many different foods. It can be bread, pasta, or even sweet treats like cookies. People all over the world use dough to make things they love to eat.

Making dough involves many different steps. For bread, you often mix the flour and liquid, then you knead it. Kneading is a way of working the dough to make it smooth. This helps build gluten, which gives the dough its strong shape. Some doughs need to rise, which means they sit and grow. You might use yeast to help them grow big. Other doughs, called quick breads, use baking powder instead. These make things like scones or biscuits very fast.

History shows that people have worked with dough for a very long time.

In ancient Egypt, statues show servants kneading dough. This tells us that making dough is an old tradition. Different cultures have used local plants for a long time. Some people used corn, oats, or cassava to make unleavened bread. Even old recipes for biscuits go back hundreds of years. One recipe for "white bisket bread" is from the year 1604. Another recipe for "Satin Biscuit" is from 1677.

There are many special ways to shape and cook dough. You can bake it in an oven or steam it. Some doughs are fried, like churros or funnel cakes.

You can also make laminated dough. This is when you fold dough over fat to make many thin layers. This makes flaky foods like puff pastry or the South Asian flatbread called paratha. Some doughs, like choux pastry, are cooked on a stove first. This makes a thick paste used for cream puffs. Choux is the French word for cabbage because of the shape of the puffs.

Every kind of dough has its own special rules. If you add more fat, the dough becomes "short." This means it is less stretchy and more crumbly, like pie crust. If you add eggs, the dough becomes moist and easy to roll. You can even change how pasta feels by adding more or less liquid. Some pasta is fresh, while other pasta is dried to stay good for a long time. Whether it is a soft tortilla or a crunchy cookie, dough is a wonderful way to make food.
