It is usually made from flour and sugar. Most recipes also use eggs and a fat like butter or oil. A leavening agent helps the cake rise. This can be baking powder or baking soda. Some cakes have extra things like fruit or nuts. You might even find cocoa or vanilla inside. Many people enjoy eating cake at big celebrations.

It is common at weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. In some cultures, cutting a wedding cake is a special ceremony. People even make cakes for holidays like Christmas or Easter.

There are many ways to make a cake. Some cakes are called shortened cakes because they contain fat. Others are unshortened cakes because they have no fat at all.

A butter cake uses creamed butter and sugar to hold air. A classic pound cake uses one pound each of butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. Sponge cakes are different because they use whipped eggs to rise. This creates a light and airy texture. Some sponge cakes use vegetable oil to stay moist. You can also find flourless cakes made with almond meal or chocolate. These do not use wheat flour at all.

Cakes have a very long history. The word "cake" comes from an old Viking word, "kaka."

The ancient Greeks made cakes called "plakous." These were made with flour, eggs, milk, nuts, and honey. They even used beer to help their cakes rise. In ancient Rome, people made a cake called "placenta." This was baked inside a pastry case. In the early 14th century, English cakes were very much like bread. They were round and flat. Bakers would turn them over while they were cooking.

In the United States, cake making changed a lot in the 1920s. More women joined the workforce during this time. This meant they had less time to cook many different dishes.

During the Great Depression, a company made the first cake mix in a box. This helped people make food easily when money was tight. Later, companies like General Mills sold cake mixes for convenience. In the 1950s, people found that making the cake was too simple. A psychologist named Ernest Dichter suggested using frosting to help. This let people use their creativity to decorate the cakes instead.

Cakes come in many fun shapes and sizes.
