It is made of calcium and titanium. It also contains silicon and oxygen. Sometimes, it holds other elements too. It can have iron or aluminium inside. Rare earth metals like cerium and yttrium are also found in it. Some titanite even has thorium. This thorium is a radioactive element. It can cause damage to the crystal structure. This change is called being metamict.

This mineral has a very interesting way it works with light. It is often clear or see-through. You might see colors like red, gray, yellow, green, or brown. The color often depends on how much iron is inside. Low iron makes green or yellow colors. High iron makes brown or black colors. Titanite shows a special trait called trichroism. This means it shows three different colors. This happens depending on the body color. It also has high dispersive power. This power is even higher than a diamond.

People have used different names for this mineral for a long time. Many people called it sphene. The name sphene was the most common name for a while. In 1982, a group called the IMA changed this. They officially chose the name titanite instead. They called the name sphene "discredited." However, people still use the name sphene today. It is still used for gemstones in many books. Some scientists still use the old name in their papers.

Humans use titanite for several important things. One use is to get titanium dioxide. This is used to make pigments for color. People also use it as a gemstone. It is often a chartreuse color. However, it is a bit soft for jewelry. It is also used as a U-Pb geochronometer. This is a tool used to tell the age of rocks. Some people might even know it from games. It is a material in the Dark Souls video game series.
