Monazite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Monazite is a group of reddish-brown minerals.

It is important because it contains rare-earth elements. These are special elements that are hard to find. Most monazite is the type called monazite-(Ce). This means it has a lot of the element cerium.

There are five common types based on which element is most common. These include monazite-(La), (Nd), (Sm), and (Gd). Monazite often appears as small, isolated crystals. The name comes from a Greek word meaning "to be solitary."

Getting metals out of monazite is a big job. One way is called acid cracking. This way works by heating the mineral with strong sulfuric acid.

This process can separate thorium from the rare-earth elements. Another way is called alkaline cracking. This uses a hot liquid called sodium hydroxide.

This method helps save the phosphate parts of the mineral. Scientists use these steps to create useful products. They can make things like thorium-phosphate or uranium concentrate.

People have studied monazite for a long time. In the 1880s, Carl Auer von Welsbach noticed monazite sand in Brazil. He was looking for thorium to use in light bulbs.

Later, in 1904, T. H. Laby and Douglas Mawson found radium in Australian monazite. They tested their samples at the University of Sydney. This helped people understand how radioactive the mineral could be. These discoveries helped start the rare-earth industry.

Monazite is found in many different places around the world. It is often found in placer deposits, which are heavy sands on beaches.

India, Madagascar, and South Africa have very large deposits. India has especially rich sands. In the 1950s, a place in South Africa called Steenkampskraal was a huge producer. Monazite also has a hardness of 5.0 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. It also contains small amounts of silica, uranium, and thorium.

Monazite is useful for more than just making metals. Because it contains thorium and uranium, it is radioactive. This radioactivity actually helps scientists study the Earth. They use a method called monazite geochronology to date old rocks.

They look at how uranium decays into lead over time. Monazite can also help store nuclear waste. Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory found it works better than glass. It stays strong even when it is hit by radiation.
