Staurolite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Staurolite is a very interesting mineral. It can look reddish brown or even black. Most of the time, it is opaque. This means light cannot pass through it. When you rub it, it leaves a white streak.

This mineral is quite hard to scratch. It has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5. Scientists call it a nesosilicate. This describes how its parts are built.

Many staurolite crystals grow in a special way. They often form a shape like a cross. This is called cruciform penetration twinning. The name comes from two Greek words. Stauros means cross and lithos means stone.

These crystals often look like long prisms. Sometimes they grow as porphyroblasts. These are large crystals inside a rock. They can even look like swiss cheese. This happens when quartz grows around them.

Geologists use this mineral to learn about the past. It is an index mineral. This means it helps us solve a mystery. It helps us guess how hot a rock was. It also shows how much pressure was there. This happens during metamorphism. Metamorphism is when rocks change from heat and pressure.

We can see these changes in gneiss and schist.

Staurolite is found in many different places. It is the official state mineral of Georgia. You can find many samples in Fannin County. It is also in Fairy Stone State Park in Virginia.

Other places include Island Park in Idaho. You can find it in Taos, New Mexico. It is also in Minnesota and Norway. It can even be found in the Lepontine Alps in Switzerland.

Learning about staurolite helps us understand our Earth. It shows us how heat and pressure work together. The chemical formula is Fe2+2Al9O6(SiO4)4(O,OH)2. Magnesium, zinc, and manganese can swap with iron. Trivalent iron can also swap with aluminium. This makes the mineral very complex. It is like a puzzle made of tiny parts.
