Staurolite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Staurolite is a fascinating nesosilicate mineral. A nesosilicate is a type of mineral with a specific internal structure. This mineral often appears in reddish brown or black colors. It is mostly opaque, meaning light does not pass through it easily. When you rub it against a surface, it leaves a white streak.

Staurolite is quite hard and durable. It has a Mohs hardness rating between 7 and 7.5. This makes it a very tough material to scratch or break.

The chemical makeup of staurolite is quite complex. Its chemical formula is Fe2+2Al9O6(SiO4)4(O,OH)2. This formula shows that it contains iron and aluminium. Other elements can also join the structure. Magnesium, zinc, and manganese can substitute for iron in the crystal. Additionally, trivalent iron can substitute for aluminium.

These substitutions happen within the crystal lattice. This variety in chemistry is a key part of how the mineral forms.

Staurolite is known for its unique crystal shapes. It belongs to the monoclinic crystal system. Many crystals grow in a prismatic shape. You might also see them as porphyroblasts. A porphyroblast is a large crystal that grows inside a rock.

One of the most famous features is cruciform penetration twinning. This is when crystals grow together in a cross-shape. The name comes from the Greek words "stauros" for cross and "lithos" for stone. This twinning is very easy to see with the naked eye.

Geologists look for staurolite in specific types of rocks. It is a regional metamorphic mineral. Metamorphism occurs when rocks change due to heat and pressure. Staurolite grows during intermediate to high grade metamorphism. This means it forms under significant environmental changes. You can often find it in rocks called gneiss and schist.

In these rocks, it may appear alongside almandine garnet, micas, or kyanite. It can also appear with albite, biotite, and sillimanite.

When looking at thin sections under a microscope, staurolite has distinct traits. It shows lower first order birefringence. This is a property related to how light moves through the crystal. This property is similar to what you see in quartz. The twinning also shows optical continuity. In some metamorphic rocks, it has a "swiss cheese" appearance. This happens when poikilitic quartz grows around the mineral. This can create a mantled porphyroblastic character.

Staurolite is very important for studying Earth's history. Scientists use it as an index mineral. An index mineral helps geologists understand the conditions of the past. By finding staurolite, they can estimate specific environmental factors. It helps them calculate the temperature of the rock. It also helps them determine the depth and pressure during metamorphism.

This makes it a vital tool for understanding tectonic processes.

This mineral is found in many locations around the world. It is the official state mineral of Georgia in the United States. Much of it is found in Fannin County, Georgia. You can also find it in the Lepontine Alps in Switzerland.

In the United States, it appears in Fairy Stone State Park in Virginia. This park was named after a local legend regarding the mineral. Other locations include Island Park, Idaho, near Henrys Lake. You can also find samples in Taos, New Mexico, and near Blanchard Dam in Minnesota. Finally, it is found in Selbu, Norway.
