Wollastonite is a bright white mineral that plays a big role in our world.

It is a calcium inosilicate, which means it contains calcium and silicon. This mineral is very useful for many different jobs. People use it to make things like paint, plastic, and ceramics. It can even be used in cement to help the environment. By adding it to soil, it can help with carbon mineralization. This is a way to store carbon dioxide in the earth.

This mineral forms through a specific way it works deep underground. It often starts with impure limestone or dolomite. When these rocks face very high heat and pressure, they change. Sometimes, fluids that carry silica are present during this change. This can happen in a place called a skarn. A skarn forms when limestone meets hot, invading igneous rock. A chemical reaction happens between the calcite and the silica. During this step, carbon dioxide is lost. This leaves behind the calcium inosilicate we call wollastonite.

Scientists have studied this mineral for a long time. It is named after William Hyde Wollaston. He was a famous English chemist and mineralogist. He lived from 1766 to 1828. For a while, people thought it was part of the pyroxene group. This is because the two groups have a similar ratio of silicon to oxygen. However, researchers Warren and Biscoe showed they are different in 1931. They found that the crystal structure is actually quite unique. They placed it in a group called the pyroxenoids.

There are many interesting facts about how much we use this mineral. In 2021, the world produced about 1,200,000 tonnes of crude ore. The world has reserves that might exceed 100 million tonnes. Major producers include China, India, the United States, Mexico, and Finland. In the United States, it is mined in places like Willsboro and Gouverneur, New York. In 2008, the price for raw powder was between US$80 and US$500 per tonne. This price changed based on the size and shape of the particles.

You can find the effects of wollastonite in many items around you. In ceramics, it helps pottery stay bright and strong while firing. It also helps prevent cracks or defects in the glaze. In the world of construction, it can replace asbestos in floor tiles. It is very stable at high temperatures and resists chemical attack. When added to paint, it helps the color last longer against weather. It even makes plastics stronger and more stable when they get warm. It is a tiny mineral that does a huge amount of work.
