Wolframite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Wolframite is a very special mineral. It is a main source for the metal tungsten. This metal is very heavy and strong. It also has a very high melting temperature.

People use tungsten for many important jobs. It can make parts for electric filaments. It is also used for armor-piercing ammunition. Hard machine tools are often made from tungsten carbide. In the 19th century, people used tungsten salts to dye cotton. They even used them to make fire-retardant costumes for the stage.

This mineral forms in a few different ways. It often forms through magmatic-hydrothermal processes. This means it is linked to hot, liquid rock called magma. It can also form through metamorphic processes. Wolframite is often found in quartz veins. It can also be found in structures called pegmatites. These are often found near granitic rocks.

The mineral can look like a dark grey or reddish black mass. In its pure crystal form, it has a specific shape. This shape is called a monoclinic crystal system. It can also look like long, thin prisms.

People have been studying this mineral for a long time. The name comes from a German term, "wolf rahm." A man named Johan Gottschalk Wallerius used this name in 1747. Before that, Georg Agricola used the name "Lupi spuma" in 1546. This translates to "wolf's froth" or "wolf's cream." People thought the mineral "ate" tin during mining. This was like a wolf eating a sheep. The name tungsten comes from Swedish words. It means "heavy stone" because the metal is so dense.

Many different places in the world have wolframite. China has the largest supply of tungsten ore. They have about 60% of the world's supply. In 2022, the world produced 84,000 metric tons of tungsten. China produced 71,000 of those metric tons. Other producers include Vietnam, Russia, Bolivia, and Rwanda.

The world also has large reserves of tungsten. There are about 3,800,000 metric tons in reserve. China holds 1,800,000 of those metric tons. Other countries with large reserves are Russia, Vietnam, Spain, and Austria.

Today, tungsten does many helpful things in science. It can act as a catalyst. A catalyst is something that helps a chemical reaction happen. Tungsten helps make gasoline during oil refining. It also helps clean up harmful nitrogen oxide gases.

Another use is as a lubricant. A lubricant helps parts move smoothly. Tungsten disulfide is a special lubricant. It can work in very extreme heat. It works well in both air and a vacuum. This makes it very useful for hard jobs.
