Wolframite is found in quartz veins. It forms in ways tied to hot magma. China has the largest supply of tungsten. They have about 60% of the world supply. Other countries produce it too. These include Russia, Vietnam, and Bolivia. In 2022, the world made 84,000 metric tons of tungsten. The name comes from a German word. It means "wolf's froth." This was because the mineral ate up tin during mining. The name "tungsten" means "heavy stone" in Swedish.
