This mineral is the main source of tantalum. Tantalum is a metal. It does not rust from heat or acid. This makes it very useful. People often mix it with other metals to make alloys. An alloy is a mix of metals. These mixes are strong and can stand high heat.

Doctors use tantalum in surgical steel. The metal does not irritate body parts. This makes it safe for people. Tantalum is also used in glass. It helps change how light moves through the glass.

Tantalite is a very heavy rock. It is much heavier than a similar mineral called columbite. Some tantalite has much iron in it. We call this ferrotantalite. Other types have much manganese in it. We call this manganotantalite.
