Ilmenite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ilmenite is a heavy, dark mineral that looks like steel.

It is a black or steel-gray solid that is quite heavy for its size. This mineral is the most important ore for finding titanium. Titanium is a very useful metal used in many different ways. Most importantly, ilmenite provides titanium dioxide. This is a bright white pigment used in many things. You can find it in paints, printing inks, and paper. It is also used in plastics, fabrics, sunscreen, and even food.

Learning how ilmenite works involves looking at its tiny parts. The mineral is made of titanium and iron. In its crystal structure, these parts sit in alternating layers. This specific way of stacking makes the mineral part of the trigonal system. Pure ilmenite is paramagnetic, which means it has a very weak pull toward magnets. However, it often mixes with other minerals like hematite or magnetite. When this happens, the ilmenite becomes much more magnetic. This makes it easier for people to separate the mineral from other materials.

People discovered the secrets of this mineral a long time ago. In 1791, a man named William Gregor found black sand in a stream. This stream ran through a valley in Cornwall, near a village called Manaccan. Gregor identified titanium as a part of the mineral in that sand. He first called the mineral manaccanite. Later, the same mineral was found in the Ilmensky Mountains in Russia. Because of that location, it was given the name ilmenite.

There are many important facts about where ilmenite comes from. Most of it is found in heavy mineral sands. These are deposits where the mineral is concentrated by nature. In 2011, Australia was the largest producer of ilmenite ore. They produced about 1.3 million tonnes that year. China is also a very big player in this industry. In 2020, China mined about 35 percent of the world's ilmenite.

Ilmenite connects to the world around you through everyday objects. When you use a white crayon or paint a room, you might be using titanium dioxide. This white color comes from processing ilmenite through special ways. Scientists use the sulfate process or the chloride process to make it. You can even find these minerals in large open mines. The Tellnes mine in Norway is one of the largest in the world. It is a huge place where people work to find these useful minerals.
