Anatase

Anatase is a special mineral made of titanium dioxide.

It is a form of titanium dioxide called a polymorph. This means it has the same parts as other forms but a different shape. There are three other natural forms: brookite, akaogiite, and rutile. Rutile is the most common and stable one. Pure anatase looks white or colorless. However, it usually looks like a black solid in nature. This happens because of tiny impurities inside the mineral.

Anatase grows in small and sharp crystals.

These crystals often have a shape called an octahedron. This means they have eight faces. Anatase is different from rutile because it looks skinnier. It has a longer vertical axis because of its steep angles. It is also less hard than rutile. On the Mohs scale, it scores between 5.5 and 6. It is also less dense than rutile. You might notice it has a very shiny, metallic luster.

People have studied this mineral for a long time. The modern name came from René Just Haüy in 1801. The name means "stretching out." This describes how the crystals look stretched along an axis. An earlier name was octahedrite. Horace Bénédict de Saussure gave it that name. He chose it because of the crystal shape. Other old names include oisanite and dauphinite. These names are not used much anymore.

Scientists find anatase in many different places.

You can find it in granite and mica schist in France. It also appears in sedimentary rocks like sandstone and clay. In the Alps, it grows in crevices of gneiss. One famous spot is Binnenthal near Brig in Switzerland. Anatase is metastable, which means it can change. If it gets hot, it turns into rutile. This happens at temperatures between 550 and 1000 degrees Celsius.

Anatase is very useful in our modern world.

Scientists often make it in labs using the sol-gel process. This is a way to create crystals through chemical methods. They can use things like titanium tetrachloride to make it. This mineral can act as a semiconductor. It can even be put on glass as a thin film. This film helps the glass stay clean. It also helps the glass stop fogging up under ultraviolet radiation.
