Iron(III) oxide

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Iron(III) oxide is a very important chemical compound. You might know it as red iron oxide or ferric oxide. It is one of the three main types of iron oxides in the world. In nature, it appears as a mineral called hematite. This mineral is the main source of iron for the steel industry. It is also very similar to the rust you see on old metal.

This material can work in many different ways. One way is through a thing called a thermite reaction. In this reaction, iron(III) oxide is reduced by aluminium. This process creates a huge amount of heat. People use this heat to weld thick metal rails for train tracks. They use a ceramic container to guide the molten iron between the rails.

People have used this substance for a very long time. Since the medieval period, it has been used to color stained glass. It can create beautiful yellow, orange, and red colors in the glass. In the past, it was also used as a cosmetic. Today, it is still used for many industrial jobs. It is even found in ancient Chinese Jian ceramic glazes.

There are many specific facts about how it is used. A very fine powder is called rouge or jeweler's rouge. Jewelers use it to give a superior finish to gold jewelry. Some types, like Pigment Red 101, are approved by the FDA for cosmetics. Calamine lotion uses about 0.5% iron(III) oxide to help with itchy skin. This small amount also gives the lotion its pink color.

Iron(III) oxide also has special magnetic properties. It was once the most common material used in magnetic storage. This includes magnetic disks for computers and tapes for audio and video. Some forms, like the gamma phase, are ferromagnetic. This means they can be used to record information. Even tiny particles can show special magnetic behaviors.
