Ironstone is a special kind of sedimentary rock.

This rock forms from layers of sediment. It contains a lot of iron ore compounds. These compounds allow people to smelt iron. Smelting is a way to get metal from ore. Ironstone is not the same as native iron. Native iron is very rare and found as pure metal.

Most ironstone is hard and often has bands. It is different from very old banded iron formations.

There are many ways this rock can form. It can be deposited as sediment directly. It can also form through chemical replacement. The iron minerals inside come in different types. Some are called oxides, like hematite or magnetite. Others are carbonates, like siderite. Some are even silicates, such as chamosite.

These minerals work together to make the rock. The rock can also hold opal gems or concretions.

People have used this rock for many things. In the past, most British iron came from ironstone. Now, people rarely use it for iron. There is not enough ironstone to be an economic source. This means it is not cheap or easy to use.

Some people use it for making ceramics. However, the iron oxide impurities make it bad for that. You might hear about "ironstone china" from the 19th century. That china actually contains no ironstone at all.

Ironstone is also very useful for building. You can find it in many old structures. For example, it is used in churches in Leicestershire. These churches are in Kirby Bellars and South Croxton.

Eydon Hall in Northamptonshire also uses this stone. Even artists use it for their work. Henry Moore made a sculpture called Head in 1930. This is a rare example of ironstone art.

Looking at ironstone can be quite interesting. The outside of the rock often looks brown. This happens because of oxidation on the surface. Oxidation is a change caused by the air. If you crack the rock open, it looks grey.

Some ironstone has red and black stripes. People call this beautiful pattern tiger iron. This striped rock is often used for jewelry. It shows how much variety is in nature.
