It is a metamorphic rock, which means it changes form. It starts as a rock called limestone or dolomite. These rocks are made of carbonate minerals. Deep underground, intense heat and pressure change them. This way of changing is called metamorphism.

During this change, the minerals grow into new crystals. These crystals form a tight, interlocking mosaic.

How does marble get its colors? Pure white marble comes from very clean limestone. Most marble has pretty swirls or veins called striations. These patterns come from tiny bits of impurities. These might be clay, sand, or iron oxides. Some marble looks green because of a mineral called serpentine.

These impurities are moved and reshaped during metamorphism. They create the unique look of each stone.

People have used marble for a very long time. The word "marble" comes from the Ancient Greek word "marmaros." This means a shining or sparkling stone.

In the Roman period, people used white marble all over the Mediterranean. They traded it to build statues and large buildings. Artists have loved it since classical times. It is great for carving the human form. This is because it is easy to shape and does not shatter easily.

Marble is special because of how it handles light. It has a quality called subsurface scattering. This means light can sink into the stone. Light travels 12.7 to 38 millimeters into the surface before it scatters out.

This gives sculptures a lifelike, waxy appearance. Builders also value it because it is hard and durable. It can be polished to a very high shine. This makes it great for floors and walls.

Today, many countries work to find and move marble. Extraction is done by quarrying, which means digging it out of the earth.

China and Italy are two of the biggest producers. In 2018, Turkey was the world leader in marble exports. They sent 42% of the world's marble to other places. China was the biggest buyer of marble in 2018. You can see marble in famous places like the Taj Mahal.
