Most marble, however, features signature veins and swirls known as striations. These patterns occur because impurities like clay, sand, silt, or chert were present in the protolith. During metamorphism, these substances are redistributed and recrystallized. 
Marble is a unique material for sculptors due to its physical properties. It has a moderate hardness that makes it easier to carve than many other stones. It also possesses a quality called subsurface scattering. Because of the low index of refraction of calcite, light can penetrate the surface. Light travels between 12.7 and 38 millimeters into the stone before it scatters back out.

This involves polishing the surface with an acidic solution and steel wool. Using magnesium fluorosilicate (MgSiF6) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) creates calcium hexafluorosilicate (CaSiF6). This new substance is harder, more glossy, and more stain-resistant than the original surface.
Human history is deeply connected to the use of this stone. The word "marble" comes from the Ancient Greek word *marmaros*, meaning "shining stone." 

Modern marble production and trade involve massive global figures. Four countries—China, Italy, India, and Spain—account for almost half of the world's production. In 2018, China produced 34% and Italy produced 19%. While China and Italy lead in production, Turkey was the world leader in exports in 2018. Turkey held a 42% share of the global marble trade. China was also the largest importer, holding a 64% market share.
