Augite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Augite is a very common mineral. It belongs to a group called pyroxenes. This mineral helps form many types of rocks. It is often found in mafic igneous rocks. These include rocks like gabbro and basalt. It also appears in ultramafic rocks.

You might see it in metamorphic rocks too. These are rocks like mafic granulite. Augite is important for understanding how rocks form. It helps tell the story of the Earth.

Augite crystals have a specific shape. They are monoclinic and prismatic. This means they look like long prisms. The mineral has two main ways it breaks. These are called cleavages. The flat surfaces meet at angles near 90 degrees.

Most pieces look dull. They can be dark green, brown, or black. Some special pieces look very shiny. This shine comes from its Greek name, augites. That word means "brightness."

Scientists use augite to learn about the past. The mineral contains calcium. The amount of calcium changes with temperature. It also changes with pressure. Temperature is the main factor here.

This makes it useful for reconstructing temperature histories. It shows how hot a rock once was. As a rock cools, things change inside it. Augite may exsolve lamellae of other minerals. These are thin layers of pigeonite or orthopyroxene. This happens when the temperature goes down.

Abraham Gottlob Werner named this mineral. He gave it the name in 1792.

Augite is a solid solution. This means it can hold many different elements. It contains calcium, magnesium, and iron. It also has sodium and titanium. It can contain aluminium as well. It is related to minerals like diopside and hedenbergite. These are called endmembers in the pyroxene group. There is also a gap between augite and omphacite. This gap happens at higher temperatures.

Augite is often found with other minerals. You might see it with orthoclase or sanidine. It also grows near labradorite and olivine. Other partners include leucite and amphiboles.

Even though it is common, it is not used for money. There are no industrial or economic uses for it. It does not help make tools or products. It is simply a natural part of our world. It stays hidden in the rocks beneath our feet. Scientists study it to understand the planet.
