It forms when hot magma cools very slowly. This slow cooling makes large crystals.

We call this texture phaneritic. This means the crystals are big enough to see.

Gabbro is a mafic rock. This means it is rich in iron and magnesium. It also has much calcium. These minerals make the rock dark. Most of the ocean floor is made of gabbro.

It forms at mid-ocean ridges.

This rock can hold many useful things. It often contains gold, silver, and copper. It also has platinum. The Merensky Reef is a very important source of platinum.

People in the building industry call it "black granite." However, gabbro is very hard. This makes it difficult to work with. Some types look like pretty stones. One type is called indigo gabbro. It has black and lilac-grey colors. People use it as a semi-precious stone.
