A complex volcano is a special kind of landform. You might also hear them called compound volcanoes.

These volcanoes are a mix of many different parts. They contain related volcanic centers and lava flows. They also have pyroclastic rock. This is rock made from volcanic material. These volcanoes are quite important to our planet. They have been part of Earth's history for a very long time.

There are a few ways these volcanoes work. They can form when the way they erupt changes. Sometimes the main vent area moves to a new spot. A stratovolcano might create a large caldera. A caldera is a huge hole in the ground.

This hole can then fill up with a lava dome. A lava dome is a rounded hill of lava. Small cinder cones or craters can also grow on the rim. This makes the volcano look like a collection of many shapes.

These volcanic shapes have existed for a very long time. We see evidence of them in very old rocks. In northern New Mexico, there are rocks called ash flow tuffs. These rocks are from the Precambrian time. This shows that caldera complexes were important long ago. They have shaped the Earth through many different ages. They are widespread in our geologic history.

You can find these volcanoes in many places today. Yellowstone National Park sits on three caldera complexes. The Long Valley Caldera is in eastern California. In Colorado, the San Juan Mountains are made of Neogene-age complexes. Many rocks in Nevada and Idaho are also these types. The Bennett Lake Caldera is in Canada. It is located in the Yukon Territory and British Columbia. These sites show how much the Earth changes.

Many famous places around the world are complex volcanoes. You can find them in Japan at Akita-Yake-Yama. Mount Etna is not listed, but Vesuvius is in Italy. There are volcanoes in the Canary Islands called Teide. In the United States, you can see Mount Mazama in Oregon. Some are even in the Indian Ocean at the McDonald Islands. These sites help us understand how the ground beneath us works. They connect the deep Earth to the world we see today.
