Geophysics is a science that studies our Earth. It also looks at the space around our planet.

Scientists use math and tools to learn how things work. They study the shape of the Earth. They also study gravity. Gravity is the force that pulls things toward the ground.

Gravity can help us find minerals deep in the soil.

Geophysicists also study vibrations. These are called seismic waves. They travel through the Earth's inside. When the ground shakes during an earthquake, we can measure these waves. This helps us learn about the rocks below us.

Our planet has a magnetic field. This field acts like a shield. It protects us from the solar wind from the sun. This field comes from moving liquid iron in the Earth's core. Sometimes, the magnetic poles switch places. This is called a polarity reversal.

Heat also moves inside the Earth. This heat comes from the planet cooling down. It also comes from radioactivity. Radioactivity is when tiny parts of atoms break apart. This heat helps move the plates on the surface. This process is called plate tectonics.
