Edaphology

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Edaphology is a way to study how soil helps living things. It looks at how ground affects plants and people. This study is one part of soil science. The other part is called pedology. Pedology focuses on how soil forms and its types. Edaphology is different because it looks at how we use land.

Many people studied this long ago. Cato was an early thinker. He wrote about farming. He said that rotating crops helps the soil. This adds nitrogen to the ground. Another man named Van Helmont did a test. He grew a willow tree in a pot. He only gave it rainwater for five years. The tree grew much heavier. He thought the tree was made of water.

Today, we study agricultural soil science. This helps us grow food. We look at plant nutrients. Nutrients are the things plants need to grow. We also study environmental soil science. This looks at how soil interacts with the world. It studies things like acid rain and global warming. We also learn how to fix soil with metals in it.
