Soil physics

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Soil physics is a way to study the ground. It looks at the physical parts of soil. Soil is made of solids, liquids, and gases. These parts move in many ways.

Scientists use physics to study these parts. They also use chemistry and engineering. This helps them solve real problems. It helps with farming and building. It also helps us understand nature.

Many people have studied soil. Edgar Buckingham studied how gas moves in soil. He also looked at how water flows. Willard Gardner used special tools to study moisture. He could predict where water would be.

Lorenzo Richards studied how water moves in soil. He used a tool called a tensiometer. This tool measures soil water potential. Water potential is how water moves in the dirt. John R. Philip found math ways to study water. Martinus van Genuchten studied how soil holds water. This is called water retention.

Knowing these things helps us manage the land. It helps us know when to water plants. It helps us build strong roads.
