Scientists first made it in labs. They worked in Scotland and Germany. They used wheat as the mother plant. They used rye as the father plant. At first, the new plants could not make seeds. This is called being sterile. To fix this, scientists used a chemical. This chemical helped the plants make seeds.

Triticale has many great traits. It has the grain quality of wheat. It also has the strength of rye. Rye helps the plant grow in tough soil. It also helps the plant fight diseases. This grain has more protein than wheat. It also has more lysine, which is a good nutrient.

Many people use triticale today. It is a very important food for animals. It is also used as an energy crop. Some people eat it in breakfast cereals. You might even find it in pasta or pizza dough. Many countries grow it. In 2014, 37 countries harvested it. The total was 17.1 million tons.
