Scientists can join two different plants together. This is called somatic fusion. It lets them make a new hybrid plant. This hybrid has traits from both parents.

One way to do this is with plant cells. First, they remove the cell wall. They use a special tool called an enzyme. This leaves a tiny cell called a protoplast. Next, they join the cells together. They might use an electric shock. This is called electrofusion. The cells join and their centers fuse. This new center is called a heterokaryon. Then, they use hormones to grow a new wall. The cells grow into a small clump. Soon, they grow into a full plant.

This helps farmers a lot. They can make a potato that fights disease. They join a crop potato with a wild potato. The wild one stays healthy. The new plant gets that strength.

Scientists also use this to study how cells work. They can join human cells with mouse cells. This helps them map genes. Genes are the parts that tell cells what to do.
