Rye is very tough. It can grow in cold weather and poor soil. It can even grow in sandy soil or heavy clay. This makes it useful in places like Northern Europe and Russia. Some rye is planted in the autumn. This is called winter rye. It can survive under the snow.

People use rye for many things. They make flour for bread and pumpernickel. In Scandinavia, people love rye crispbread. Rye is also used for beer and whiskey. Some people even use rye flour to make red house paint in Sweden.

Farmers also use rye to feed animals. It grows fast in the spring. This gives animals plenty of food to eat. Scientists even made a new grain called triticale. It is a mix of wheat and rye. It has the best parts of both plants.
