Ergot is a group of fungi. They grow on plants like rye, wheat, and barley.

The fungus starts as a tiny spore. This spore lands on a flower. It grows inside the plant. It replaces the seed with a hard part. We call this part a sclerotium. Inside the sclerotium, the fungus makes alkaloids. Alkaloids are special chemicals.

These chemicals can make people and animals sick. This sickness is called ergotism. Some people called it "St. Anthony's fire." It can cause muscle spasms or fever. It can also make people see things that are not there. In bad cases, it can stop blood flow to fingers or toes.

Ergot can also be used for medicine. Doctors use it to help stop bleeding. Scientists also study it to make new drugs. Some drugs made from ergot help with migraines. Other drugs help people with Parkinson's disease.

Farmers work hard to stop ergot. They change how they plant crops. They also use deeper ploughing. This helps keep the grain safe to eat.
