Ergot is a group of fungi belonging to the genus Claviceps. These fungi grow on many different types of grasses and cereal plants.

The most well-known member is Claviceps purpurea, which grows on rye. Other species live in tropical areas and grow on plants like sorghum or millet. This fungus is very important because it can change the quality of crops. If the grains are contaminated, it can cause a sickness called ergotism. This happens when humans or other mammals eat the infected plants.

An ergot infection starts when a tiny spore lands on a flower. The spore acts like a pollen grain to enter the plant. Once inside, the fungus grows into a web called mycelium. This web destroys the plant's ovary and takes the nutrients meant for a seed. At first, the plant might leak a sugary liquid called honeydew. This liquid carries millions of tiny spores that insects can spread. Eventually, the fungus turns into a hard, dark part called a sclerotium.

This hard part stores special chemicals called alkaloids.

People have known about ergot for a very long time. In the Middle Ages, people called the sickness "St. Anthony's fire." This name came from a group of monks called the Hospital Brothers of St. Anthony. They were started in the year 1095 to help people with this illness. In 2020, scientists found a fossil in amber that showed ergot-like fungi lived on grasses long ago. This discovery helps us understand how these fungi evolved over time. It shows that these parasites have been around for a very long time.

Ergotism can cause many different and serious symptoms. One type causes fever, muscle spasms, and even hallucinations. This happens because the alkaloids affect the central nervous system. Another type affects how blood flows through the body. It can cause a burning feeling in the hands and feet. In very bad cases, this can lead to the loss of fingers or toes.

In livestock, ergot can cause many problems. It can lead to poor health in horses and cattle.

Even though it can be dangerous, ergot is also used in medicine. Doctors use ergot-derived drugs to help stop bleeding after childbirth. Some medicines made from these chemicals help treat migraine headaches. Other drugs are used to help people with Parkinson's disease. Scientists study the enzymes in the fungus to make better medicines.

Farmers work hard to keep ergot out of food. They use methods like changing crop rotation to protect their grain. This helps ensure that the food we eat is safe.
