Ascomycota is a huge group of living things called fungi.

People often call them sac fungi or ascomycetes. This group is the largest in the fungal kingdom. It contains over 64,000 different species. Most members belong to a group called Dikarya. This group also includes the Basidiomycota fungi. These fungi are very important to our world. They can be found in many different places.

These fungi have a special way they work to reproduce. Many use a tiny sac called an ascus.

Inside this sac, they make tiny spores called ascospores. Some species do not use these sacs at all. Instead, they use asexual reproduction to spread quickly. One way is by making conidia, which are dust-like spores. These often grow on stalks called conidiophores.

Another way is through a process called budding. This is how many yeasts grow by blowing out a small part of their cell wall.

Scientists have studied these fungi for a long time. In the past, they used different names for them. They once grouped them by what their bodies looked like. For example, they used names like Discomycetes or Pyrenomycetes. Now, we use DNA to see how they are related. This helps us find their common ancestor. This makes the group monophyletic, meaning they all come from one source. We now use DNA sequences to classify them correctly.

There are many amazing facts about these fungi. Some are single cells, while others are large and complex.

There are about 2,000 different genera in this group. Some live in the ocean, with 805 marine species found as of 2015. Almost half of all members live in lichens. They do this by joining with algae. Some fungi, like the genus Cordyceps, live on and kill insects. Others, like Penicillium, are used to make medicine.

You might see these fungi in your own life. You eat yeast in bread or drink fermented beverages. You might even eat tasty morels or truffles.

Some fungi can be a hard job for farmers. They cause diseases like apple scab or rice blast. Some can even cause skin infections in humans. Scientists also use fungi like Neurospora crassa in labs. They use them to study how cells and genes work. These fungi are part of many things you know.
