Fungi imperfecti

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some fungi are very hard to group together. Scientists call them imperfect fungi. This name is used because no one has seen them use sexual reproduction. Most fungi use two ways to make new life. They have a sexual way and an asexual way. These imperfect fungi only use the asexual way. This means they make tiny spores all by themselves. This process is called sporogenesis.

How these fungi work is quite interesting. They use asexual reproduction to create new spores. They do not need a partner to make these spores. Some fungi might do this because of tiny changes in their genes. These changes can happen very fast in a lab. Some fungi might even use a parasexual cycle. This is a way to mix traits without having actual sex.

For a long time, scientists used a special naming system. They had two different names for the same fungus. One name was for the asexual form. A different name was for the sexual form. This was allowed by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. However, this dual system was ended in 2011. Now, scientists try to treat them as the same species. This makes the naming rules much simpler today.

There are about 25,000 known species in this group. Many of these fungi are very important to us. Some produce the medicine called penicillin. Other kinds help make delicious cheeses. For example, they make Roquefort and Camembert taste special. Some species like Aspergillus niger are very common. Other fungi, like Magnaporthe oryzae, can harm rice crops.

Today, scientists use a tool called molecular systematics. This means they study the DNA of the fungi. DNA is a code found in all living things. They build phylogenetic trees to show how fungi are related. This helps them place the imperfect fungi on the tree of life. It is a hard job because they need pure samples. They must use fresh specimens or clean cultures.
