Puffball

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Puffballs are a special type of fungus. They are known for their ball-shaped bodies. Most mushrooms have a cap and gills underneath. Puffballs are different because they do not have those parts. Instead, they grow their spores inside a round fruit body. This body is called a gasterothecium, which means it is like a stomach.

Inside the puffball, spores grow in a mass called a gleba. This mass often has a unique color and texture. The puffball stays closed while the spores are still growing. Once the spores are ready, the fungus finds a way to let them out. The skin might dry out and become brittle. It might also develop a small opening called an aperture. When something hits the puffball, it bursts. This sends a cloud of dust-like spores into the air.

Scientists have studied these fungi for a long time. They used to group them in a category called Gasteromycetes. Now, we know they are a polyphyletic assemblage. This means they did not all come from one single ancestor. Instead, they evolved through a process called gasteromycetation. This happened in many different, independent events. Some puffballs have a stalk, but true puffballs usually do not have a visible stem.

There are many different kinds of puffballs. The giant puffball is named Calvatia gigantea. It can grow to be over 18 inches wide. A single mature giant puffball can make 7 × 10^7 spores. This is more spores than any other living thing known to science!

Some puffballs, like the genus Scleroderma, should be avoided. There are also false puffballs that are hard like rocks. These are often bitter and cannot be eaten.

People have used puffballs in many interesting ways. In Tibet, people burned them to make black ink. They ground the ash and mixed it with water and glue. In North America, Indigenous peoples used the spore powder as a styptic. This is a way to stop bleeding from cuts or nosebleeds. The powder can even help with wounds and burns. This is because the spores have properties that fight germs.
