Pleurotus is a large group of mushrooms.

Many people know them as oyster, abalone, or tree mushrooms. Some species are very popular to grow for food. One famous example is P. ostreatus.

These mushrooms are special because they can help the planet. Scientists use them for mycoremediation. This is a way to clean up pollutants like oil. They can even help clean up toxic ash after fires.

These mushrooms have a very specific shape. Their caps often attach to the side of a surface. This shape is called pleurotoid.

Most of these mushrooms are soft to the touch. However, P. dryinus is a bit different. It has extra parts called skeletal hyphae. These parts make it much tougher. This makes it feel more like a bracket fungus. Their spores are also very smooth and shaped like cylinders.

Finding the right names for these mushrooms is a hard job. This is because they can look very different in different places. Paul Kummer defined the genus Pleurotus in 1871. Before that, people put them in a group called Agaricus.

Scientists still study them using molecular phylogenetics. This is a way to look at their tiny genetic codes. They also test if different groups can cross-breed. If they can make fertile offspring, they are considered the same species.

There are many different types of Pleurotus living all over the world.

For example, P. ostreatus grows in North America and northern Eurasia. P. eryngii is found in Europe and the Middle East. You can find P. djamor in many tropical places. Some species like P. australis live in Australia and New Zealand. Even in the American Pacific Northwest, you can find them from March to May. They live in both tropical and temperate climates.

These mushrooms are even more interesting than they look. They are actually hunters that catch tiny worms called nematodes.

They use tiny structures called toxocysts to do this. These structures release a scent called 3-octanone. This scent stops the tiny worms so the mushroom can get nutrients. People also love to eat them in stir fries or sauté dishes. In the future, astronauts might even grow them in space. A mission called MushVroom aims to test this for long space trips.
