These mushrooms have a special shape. Their caps often attach to the side of a tree. This shape is called pleurotoid. The name Pleurotus comes from a Greek word. It means "side" or "rib."

Most are soft. But one type, P. dryinus, can be tough. It has extra parts called skeletal hyphae. These parts make it hard like a bracket fungus.

These mushrooms are also hunters. They catch tiny worms called nematodes. They use tiny parts called toxocysts to do this. These parts let out a scent. This scent stops the worms. This helps the mushroom get nutrients.

Some mushrooms can even clean the Earth. They help clean up oil spills. They can also help with toxic ash. Scientists want to grow them in space too. This could help people on long space trips.
