A truffle is a fungus that grows underground.

These fungi live near the roots of trees. This relationship is called ectomycorrhizal. This means the fungus and the tree help each other. The fungus gives the tree nutrients. In return, the tree gives the fungus power from sugar. Most truffles cannot live without their host plants.

Because they grow under the dirt, wind cannot spread them. Instead, they use animals to move. When a truffle is ready, it lets out a strong smell. This smell attracts animals like deer or squirrels. These animals eat the truffle. The truffle has spores, which are tiny bits used to make new fungi. The spores have thick walls made of chitin. This helps them survive inside an animal's gut. The spores then come out in the animal's waste. This spreads the fungus to new places.

Many people prize truffles as food. The white truffle is very valuable.
