Many people call it a sponge morel. This is because its cap looks like a sponge. It has many pits and ridges. The cap is often tan or yellow. The stem is white or pale yellow. It is also hollow inside.

These mushrooms grow in the spring. You might find them in woods or near old orchards. They like to grow near certain trees. Some people call them "May mushrooms" in North America. They can even grow in ground that was recently burned. This is because wood ash makes the soil alkaline. Alkaline means the soil is not acidic. This change helps the mushrooms grow.

Morels are very tasty.

People often fry them in butter. You should not eat them raw. Cooking them makes them safe. Some people dry them in the sun. This makes the flavor even stronger. Scientists found they have a lot of protein. They are very special to find in nature!
