life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The golden chanterelle is a bright mushroom.

Its name comes from Latin words. These words mean "chanterelle" and "culinary." Culinary means it is good for cooking. This mushroom grows in many European forests. It grows from June to December. It likes forests with many types of trees.

The mushroom has a wide and tall body. The color is yellow or dark yellow. It can have a smell like apricots.

If the cap is hurt, red spots appear. You can see a yellowish spore print. This is the color left by its tiny seeds.

Many people like to eat this mushroom. But you must be careful. It looks like the jack-o'lantern mushroom. That kind is poisonous.

You can preserve them by drying or freezing. Do not use an oven to dry them. An oven can make them taste bitter. Scientists used DNA analysis to study them. This is a way to look at tiny parts of life. They found that many golden mushrooms are different species. One group lives in Europe. Others live in Japan and Korea.
