A mushroom is the fleshy part of a fungus.

Most mushrooms grow above the ground. They grow from a web of threads called mycelium. This mycelium lives under the soil.

Mushrooms grow in steps. First, they start as a tiny pinhead. This is called a primordium. Then, they grow into a round shape called a button. As the button grows, it can break open. Some mushrooms have a ring on their stem. This is a leftover part of a veil. A veil is a layer of tissue that covers the mushroom.

Many mushrooms have a cap and a stem. Under the cap, there are thin gills. These gills make tiny spores. Spores are like a fine dust. They help the fungus spread to new places.

You can make a spore print to see their color. Some prints are white, but others can be pink or black.

Mushrooms are very different. Some are good to eat. Others are toxic, which means they can make you sick. People sometimes call poisonous mushrooms toadstools.
