People who study fungi are called mycologists. They look at how fungi grow and work. Fungi are very important to our world. Some fungi help trees grow big and strong. They do this by living near plant roots. This is called a symbiotic relationship. This means the two living things help each other.

Fungi also help clean the Earth. They can break down tough wood. They can even break down oil.

Many fungi are used in food. A tiny fungus called yeast is very common. People use yeast to bake bread and make drinks. This happens through fermentation. Fermentation is a way to change food using fungi or bacteria.

Not all fungi are helpful. Some fungi can make people or animals sick. Other fungi can hurt crops like wheat or rice. In the past, a fungus caused a big famine in Ireland. Scientists also find new medicines in fungi. They can make drugs like penicillin from molds. This helps keep people healthy.
