Fungi are a group of living things.

This group includes mushrooms, yeast, and mold. Many people think fungi are plants. But they are actually more like animals.

Plants make food from sunlight. Fungi cannot do this. Instead, they get food by soaking up tiny bits of organic matter. They do this by letting out special enzymes. These enzymes help break down food in their environment.

Most fungi are very small. They often live in soil or on dead things. They use these parts called hyphae to grow. Hyphae are long, thin threads.

These threads help them spread out. Fungi are great decomposers. This means they break down dead matter. This helps move nutrients through nature.

Many plants need fungi to live. Over 90% of plants work with fungi. This is called mycorrhizal symbiosis. It helps plants grow better. Fungi also help humans in many ways. We use them to make bread and cheese.

Some fungi even help make medicine. We call the study of fungi mycology.
